Default Starter noise when cold

I'm new to posting, but have read for some time. My 2001 with 125,000 miles has developed a starter noise AFTER the start button is released, and mostly when cold outside. It sounds as if the starter reengages for a second just as the engine starts.

I've noticed that Honda and Accura Accessories listed a replacement start button as soon as the S2000 was released years ago. Does anyone have experience with a failed starter button that causes this type of problem?

By the way, the rear axle nut replacement with fresh grease on the half-axle ends completely corrected the popping in first and reverse.

Default

sorry i didnt see this earlier 100% the starter bendix gear i had the same issue with my 00 at 65k mileage. I replaced the TCT with no help and realized that for sure it was the starter. Only on cold starts the problem seemed to occur warm starts it didnt do it as much. I replaced the starter and no more gridning noise. Its kinda of a bitch to get to because you have to have a long ass extension and you have to have some swivle bits but isnt anything that is crazy hard. Let me know if you fixed this problem more than happy to help i know its two years later but thought i would chime in if anyone ran into this thread
