A sound clip would be priceless.

I have never heard or seen a bad starter on an s2k.

The starter has a pinion gear that rides on a shaft. When you press the start button, the pinion is pushed out to mate with the teeth on the flywheel. If the pinion doesn't retract after the engine starts, it will keep grinding against the teeth on the flywheel.

Greasing the shaft on the starter might help, however that might only be a temporary fix. Something might be bent or jammed, causing it to bind and lubrication only buys you time. It could also be the solenoid sticking, which keeps the pinion pushed out.

If it were my car and I knew the problem was the starter, I'd just replace it. You don't want a recurring problem that you have to repeatedly remove the starter, and risk having to replace the flywheel because the teeth are worn.

I will try to record the sound and post back. Somedays I think it could also be a chain that is rubbing against metal, if such a scenario is even possible.

Any idea how much the starter costs? Would replacing it be a DIY project?

i know its super late but the TCT was not the problem as i did replace it and the noise was still there the TCT noise is more of a fluttering noise where as a buzz after start up was attributed to a bad starter. After replacing the starter the problem has been solved. Anyone with this issue feel free to msg me or pm id be more than happy to help diagnose and or help you through diagrams of how to swap tct or starter.

I changed the TCT and it did fix one of the sounds - the card in spoke one. It only lasted a year though, the sound is now back. The other sound is still there but only on cold days, now I'm begining to worry about it a bit. How much is a starter? I have the helms and I can follow basic simple directions, you think I can manage replacing this? How simple is this on a scale of one to 10? I consider replacing TCT a 4.

Thanks for sharing your experience. BTW, did you only hear the sound on cold days?

Yeah I have the same starter sticking sound with my car periodically on start up. kinda annoying but I'll leave it till I do a clutch job sometime or something. Nothing to be worried about.
