Is it the Starter or the Flywheel?

Its not a TCT, or brand of oil, or weight of the oil, its the starter failing to retract after the engine starts. You need a new starter. And if it keeps sticking and grinding, then a new flywheel also.

When Honda had my transmission out they put it back together without the upper start bolt. I found later during a clutch job that there was unusual wear on the starter gear as a result. A possible cause...

If it's cold and your battery is marginal, the starter may not spin fast enough to properly extend the bendix. This could cause the gears on the starter and flywheel to grind against each other, rather than fully engage as normal.

Mine does the same thing, I replaced the battery a year or two ago but the starter is probably bad on mine as it has 120K+ miles. Mine mostly only does it in the morning and until the engine gets up to temp. I may put a battery tender on mine overnight to see if it's a weak battery and just go ahead and replace the starter if that doesn't work.
Like someone said, oil viscosity or TCT has nothing to do with this. TCT is a different noise than the grind you get if the car is already running and you try and start it again.

without an explanation or logic, my startup grind went away when i switched to amsoil 5w40 from amsoil 10w30. this was for at least one month.
when i topped started topping off with leftover amsoil 10w30 i got the startup grind the next day.
maybe it is just a coincidence, but perhaps someone else can corroborate my observation.
