I read somewhere (dont have the link) that its good to turn the key to the on position, leave on for 2-3 sec, then turn off, repeat cycle again. Then turn key on again, then push the start button. Since doing this the noise where it sounds like you are starting your car after its been started, rarely happens. I think XViper recommended this but dont quote me on that.

found it a long time ago...years.

It's the t-chain tensioner. I'm working on a mod to fix the existing one, because new ones can go bad as well. I'll have more info after 8/13/06.

Does anyone have pic of exactly where this timing chain tensioner is?
I'm pretty sure I have this problem. a loud screech right after start up for a sec or two and then gone and only after a cold start (overnight, 1st start up of the day, especially when it's cold out, etc).
any help would be greatly appreciated

I just started getting "The Noise", too. It is not exceptionally loud and has a ringing sound like the starter gear is not disengaging. It lasts for a second or two after a cold start. Is this a common problem with these cars? Mine is a 2001 with about 66,000 miles on it.

OK....I have read every single post on the "Starter Afterrun Noise" and have experienced the exact same noise on my '00 S2K w/ 50K for last few months. Really thought it was the starter, though was convinced it was chain tensioner after reading all the posts. Ordere new tensioner, performed piece-of-cake install in 15 mins, even removed and bench cleaned the solenoid unit, turned the key, pressed the Start button and same noise!!

So, with all of us clearly having the same issue, what is the problem? Honda is putting out defective tensioner units? It really is the starter and no one has replaced one yet? Or it's something else that nobody has figured out yet?

I have fixed the issue close to 20 times with a new tensioner. Problem is we may not be talking about the same noise. Noise issues are difficult to sort out on the internet.

It sounds exactly as described in the forum; loud, raspy, screech, like the starter grinding on the flywheel teeth....and only for a second or so immediately after startup and goes away right after that. Only happens after sitting overnight with a cold engine.

I have never used the word screech. It is in no way a screech.

A spinning ratchet, or card in the spokes of a bycycle maybe. Vary fast clicking. 20-25 times per second at idle.
