Default start up sound/brief knock

searched plenty about this.....this doesnt happen all the time, only on certian startups, and i do recall my old ap1 doing the same thing. i go to start it, and on the first crank, i can hear what sounds like a loud click/knock. but only happens once. i'm sure this is do to the motion of the engine rocking when it first starts. the only thing is, i cant get it to happen all the time, sometimes it will be a really smooth start, other times, it will be violent and i can hear this sound. any input would be appreciated. oh, and could it possibly be the starter????

This Knock isn't one of the many normal engine sounds you hear on start-up, so I would have Honda have a look at it. You may have to leave it with them for a couple of days in order to duplicate it though. Maybe just a visual inspection of things (engine mounts, transmission, etc) will identify the problem though. Take advantage of your warranty. Good luck.

It is either:

Dry startup knock, normal

if it's violent like you say, and it's a fast clicking, timing chain tensioner

this has nothing to do with the engine, not the tensioner, etc. i've noticed it only happens on startups when the car has been sitting for less than a few minutes, on cold starts, or starts where the car has been sitting for a bit, it wont happen. i tried searching as much as i could about it, and found that it most likely how the car is built, how everything gets tossed around(ie; drivetrain) on a startup. anyways, thanks for the help.
