Squeeling sound at 3500 rpms...
Ever since I got the car at 48K miles in June I have 'enjoyed' this noise. I narrowed it down extensively and hope someone can provide some insight.
Basically with climbing rpms, at approx ~3500 rpms there is a squeeling noise coming from under the hood. It almost sounds like a squeel crossed with the noise of metal cans being dragged on the ground(like in the movies where the couple gets married and drags cans in the back of the car). This noise lasts for about 100-200 rpms and is never seen again throughout the rpm range.
I noticed the sound is most pronounced under normal acceleration in 1st, 2nd, 3rd gear (after 4th, wind is too loud) and very slight when decelerating in gear.
I have heard talk about the timing chain and suspect it may be that. Otherwise it could be the belt or a pulley. Please any ideas are welcome. If you need further information please ask.
Thanks!
Mike

I'm going to go with the slipping belt theory. Its slipping on excelleration because of the extra load... An easy way to check is look for shiney spots on the belt, and/or if its loose. Also make sure the belt is frayed anywhere.

I don't have an intake. I agree it could be the belt, but it is reproducible at 3500rpms everytime I accelerate past, no matter how hard the acceleration. I am not sure if it makes the sound if I am WOT, but I don't WOT from below 3500rpms anyway.

I'd think a pulley would make the noise constantly, though strange things can go on under a hood. If its not the belt, my old 85 pontiac sunbird's waterpump made some funky noises just before it went
At least the belt is easy to check. You don't want that thing to snap on you, it'll make a mess under your hood.
