junky: ive changed it a few times now with royal purple as i have when i first got the car. never made the noise until a few months now. sound seems to be coming from mid-front btw.

hansai: but it could very well lead to something very bad as i dont think its too common. but as you said before, maybe it could be the belt? i never thought about it. due to me always thinking worst case scenario

I see, if you have the ability I would want to get under the car and inspect it, look at the drive shaft joint up by the trans for any beggining signs of failure. Check the belt condition for sure, can do that without a lift. Its possible the throw out bearing is going bad. If it was the pilot, you think it would be making noise all the time.

how could you tell exactly if the driveshaft joints are going bad? could you tell by just looking at it or will i have to remove it?

typically if they are bad you will get movement up and down/side to side and or will see dust or rust shavings around the serrounding area of the joint. You need to get under the car and move the shaft around and inspect. You will feel some play but that will be from the inner slip yoke of the trans and or rear end depending on what end your moving, you should have no play in the u joint/cv joints, so look carfully where the play is comming from, you wont always see dust shavings, depends on if the joint wore out from lack of lube or just force. Typically it would be force since the joint on the s are sealed with no zirk fittings for maint service

I have the exact same squeak. I know what your talking about. Its almost like a high pitched chirp/Sequential bov when you shift hard. It happened just as I started to have problems with my clutch however I think its the belt slipping for split second. Im doing my clutch end of this week so I can let you know if it goes away after that. But I personally think its the belt.
