The wrong bleeder screws were in my front calipers! Their diameter was correct, but they had a finer thread pitch. After removing them, I "retapped" the caliper with the OEM hard brass bleed screws and then the Earl's solo-bleeders threaded in very smoothly. I suspect that the soft brass of the wrong bleeder screws deformed and no substantive damage was done to the steel caliper threads. Also, since the threads on the wrong screws didn't go as deeply into to caliper as the OEM or Earl's bleeders, the bottom caliper threads were not affected. I'll carefully monitor the front brakes for leakage to make sure they are working properly.
