flathead and hammer, in my experience just scuffs up the inside wall of where the seal should seat. use a punch or something with a non-sharp edge and/or broader face so you can push them out without scraping the valve cover up. if you scrape up the seal surface enough, i'd assume you are hurting the chances to make a better seal.

I used something that was flat and large enough to cover the entire seal in combination with a hammer. I ended up using the backside of a 36mm 1/2" socket.

When i did mine i took needle nose pliers to the metal ring and twisted it. doing so compressed the ring and they just slipped out. The new ones just slipped in and knocked them with a rubber mallet to make sure.

To help put them in use some lubricant and put the donuts in the freezer for a while. And when you insert, heat up the rocker cover with a hot air gun (or hairdryer if you don't have one).
