Is the hex nut part still connected to the threaded part? I am thinking not, but isn't the hex part integral to the threads?

Sounds like it would be difficult to extract the plug even with the head removed since the threads saw enough torque to shear the plug in half.

Sounds like drill and tap time. I suggest you seek professional help.

I hate to be the bringer of bad news but every time I've heard of this happening they have to take it all apart to get it out. Reason being is they can't just tap it out because pieces will fall in and destroy the rest of the block.
You could have a pricey fix coming your way. I hope someone has a better way to extract it, but so far in my experience it comes down to taking it all apart to fix it right.

Sorry to hear this happened to you.

It sounds like it's time to take it in to the shop for help. The normal way to extract something like this would be to drill it out and then use an extractor tool to get the rest of the plug out. Of course, doing that will put an awful mess directly into the cylinder, which is just as bad as the broken plug, maybe worse.

Maybe a professional mechanic has a trick or two up their sleeve, but to me it sounds like it's time to tear the head off and fix it.

What brand of plugs are you using? I've never heard of this problem before. I've broken plugs, but never to the point of not being able to remove them from the engine.

Good luck,
Bob

Personally, in order to do a proper job, with no ill side effects later on....the head has to come off no matter what! as for the actual removal of the broken plug, just send off to a local automotive machine shop. it shouldn't cost a lot to get that removed. Good Luck!
