Spare key wont start but master key works

I have been using my spare key for a few years now and it wont start this morning, however the car starts with the main master key and the valley key. Could this be the reader going bad or just a bad transponder on my spare key? I just don't want to be stuck somewhere if the reader is going bad.

Thanks for your info. Anyways it is strange that the spare key now starts the car after I have tried remotely locking and unlocking it. I do not see any correlation between the transponder and the remote.
