I found some links over at the http://www.audiworld.com regarding the Synth-Dino debate, so I thought I'd post them here. I know this was discussed several times before here and h-a.net, but they might be worth as technical FAQ'n... Here they are:

http://www.audiworld.com/tech/eng12.shtml

I had posted this in the discussion about what fuel to use before I knew there was a tech discussion section...

[green]Good reading, thanks. I was particularly interested in the paragraph concerning break in. Sounded like the break in should include some pedal to the metal periods below the recommended RPM range during break in to supply adequate combustion chamber pressures needed to properly seat the rings. The result according to the article would be a more powerful engine. I'd like to see some comparison studies.[/green]

He's so pro-Mobil and anti-Castrol, it's funny. I'm pro Castrol but not anti-Mobil. If you like Mobil, use it. If you are undecided, don't pick Mobil over Castrol becuase of this post (or the Car and Driver article he refers to). Mobil makes oils using a similar hydroisomerization process as Castrol (to make Syntec), and markets it as "full synthetic" in European markets. To most of the lubrication world, Castrol Syntec is full synthetic. I've read the "Lubrication World" article that (I think) the Car and Driver article is based on and the fact twisting is too funny. I feel that it was a marketing attack against Castrol by Mobil to protect it's market share.
