Default Soft top latch rattling

Since I bought my S about 7-8 months ago, the passenger side soft top latch has been rattling, only noticed when going over bumps and with the top UP.
I tried oiling up the inside. I tried adding shims to all the loose plastic around the latch intself. (both ideas from previous searches.)
I noticed if I hold pressure down on that side, the rattle goes away.
Nothing seems to be loose when inspecting everything.

I still have this rattle and it's slowly driving me mad. I'm not about to spend $110 for a new one.

Anyone ever experience this and/or have any ideas?

Yes, I know an easy fix is to keep the top DOWN.

TIA!!

I have a similar problem but on the driver side. It is not real bad and if I open the latch and re-close it, it goes away. It really pisses me off though I already know that Honda will tell me, "It is just a design flaw". Bastards!!

The guy with the 2001, do you have the newer HD windshield strikers? You might be better off spending the money on those. "Oiling" them is not the way to go. You don't want those things to be more loose. You want them to be a little sticky. If you must lubricate the latch internals, use white lithium grease instead. That will lubricate and keep things tighter.

The guy with the 2005, can you tell if the windshield strikers are a bit loose? They may simply need to be re-installed with Loctite on the screws.

thanks, and BTW, many many of your previous posts have helped me out on various topics in the past.

Yes, Honda went to these as OEM sometime in year 2002. All S2000s have come with the HT strikers since. You can get a set from Hardtopguy (50 bucks):

You may also need to Loctite the strikers and use a little white lithium grease in the latch internals.

The simpliest fix is to drive with the top down, you will not hear any rattle from the latches.

But seriously, the latch rattle is common and they were designed to be "loose". The HT strikers will help if your strikers are worn (and the pre-HT strikers wear easily). There were many threads (in the S2000 Talk forum) that included pictures of how to eliminate the noise. Do a search there for "latch rattle" and I'm sure you will find your answers. Good luck.

Edit: Sorry, search seems to be down right now. To summarize, the simple fix is to open the latch and insert a small piece of foam into the slot along the side under the cover. You'll get a better idea with the pictures when search is back up.

for the latches, I took them out and put in some foam adhesive tape between the metal frame and the plastic inner frame. Problem gone.
