I'm taking a wild stab at "wheel bearing". No noise when cold but after a few miles, it can get quite hot and start to make noise. Also kinda falls in line with going away for a little while after tightening axle nut. If the bearing is beginning to go (from the axle nut being loose and un-noticed too long), cinching up the axle nut might temporarily alleviate the problem, but would come back.

xviper, thanks for the help. I also think it's the "wheel bearing". this is the MY2000 model. probably had original torque spec (less than 220lbs) for 5 yrs. it might have been worn out and it became worse recently.

if so, how do I fix this? do I need new axle? or replace bearing? or could I just re-grease it and be over with?

if it doesn't cost too much, I'd like to replace bearing. to do it, what parts would I need?

thanks,

You'd need just the bearing. It needs to be pressed from the hub. Prolly a few hrs job, don't worry I didn't forget about ya

Im pretty sure this isnt whats happening to you, but i had the same sounding noise on my S about a year ago and the idiotic morons at Germain Honda in Naples Florida told me that this is a perfectly normal noise and that all S2000s make that noise. Being that they have jerked me before and some friends as well, i take my S to a local tuner shop and the shop disgnoses and corrects the problem in 5 minutes..... the wheel was loose and 1 lug was missing. Keep in mind Germain had the car for 2 days and couldnt tell a wheel was loose ><

I'm pretty sure both Nibble and Billman would have noticed if a wheel was loose and a lugnut was missing.

Does anyone know what OD of the bearing is?

EDIT: Do you need a new snap ring when you replace the bearing? Note the car is winter driven

I think these threads are related to this issue.

Those with the shakes and those that have a clicking rear.
