So Yeah .... I need a new cylinder head ..... F__K!

I think he's saying the Honda head bolts are designed for the engine and work very well, whereas the ARP ones are generic and don't work as well as the factory equipment on these engines.

So they have the head coming from Cali, and it will be around $1900 or so. Looks like I also need 6 new valves, head gasket and a few other minor things. When all is said and done, we are looking at about $6k of work to be back on the road.
Yowsah! But I need the car running. It is my DD and still have a bit of my loan left (I just got it a year and a few months ago).

1900 head
150 valves
60 head gasket
80 head bolts
100 "minor things"
6000-2300=3700 in Labor. Meaning 37 hours.
In 37 hours, I would build you the most indestructible S2000 ever built, they better do the same with all that TIME they are charging you for. Where is all the expense coming from?

I have had multiple engines bleed combustion into the cooling system under high RPM (head-lift as stated above). All caused by ARP studs, and all cured by stock head bolts. This was 8 years ago and up until now.
Put a wrench on both and follow procedure, it will be clear to the veteran wrencher which one is providing superior clamping force.

Good info. I've never installed a set of head studs, but have installed countless heads using the factory bolts. As so, I can't attest to how the studs feel. A coworker is installing ARP head studs on his B20 engine. I'd like to torque them down and see.

They are having a performance shop do the headwork to transfer everything. About $500 labor for them. Then the dealer said it charges around $1200 for each to pull and reinstall the head.
The parts cost they quoted for all the other misc. stuff was more than what you gave. I have no doubt I'm getting charged too much, but I didn't have a lot of options .....

It would've been far cheaper for you to trailer the vehicle to Bill or myself for a repair. I have no idea what Honda is doing charging 1200$ each for removal and install. I can have BOTH done in less than 6 hours if I'm left alone to work.

All data charges 6hrs to just remove the head, dealer charges $120-140/hr so that still doesn't add up. They have to be charging you close to $200/hr.

A lot of dealers look at the s2000 as a special market car. That means it gets its own special pricing unfortunetly. Most dealerships would charge no less than 10 hours to do the head. Whether or not it takes that long has no bearing. It's priced just like any other trade in a big business setting.

I just had my cylinder head done by my local Honda dealer (valve seat receding into head and a cracked exhaust valve). The head was contracted out to a local machine shop. Granted it wasn't a new head but I got new valves, springs, etc. Car was down for 2 weeks. I had to pay $3,200 for parts and labor. She runs like a champ now.
