Default So why does my dipstick pop up sometimes?

I thought that by doing my low buck krankvents I might cure this problem, but it still happens once in a while.

Sometimes when I pop the hood I find that the dipstick has risen up some. It's still in place, but has moved up so only the last Oring is holding it in place. What is causing this? Am I getting a ton of piston ring blow by thats pressurizing the crank case and pushing the dipstick up?

Its weird because now that I have my PCVs installed, when I pull the dipstick out i get that air rushing sound, so I know there's vacuum inside the case.

Is it possible my motor mounts are wearing out and the engine movement is wiggling the dipstick free?

Ive cleaned out the hole and cleaned off the dipstick and the orings to try to eliminate an extra oily seal problem already.

Sounds like a bad (sticky) PCV valve...I'd just replace it and see if that's not the cure.

P.S. If you had neg. pressure (vacuum) in the cc then the oil dip stick shouldn't pop up...the fact that it does pop up indicates positive pressure.

Mine was a result of chronic blowby. And yes, I have full price Krank vents.

Did the krank vents help or no effect on your dipstick popping out?

Putting the dipstick in backwards helps keep it in place (turn it 180)

Well I just tried that, it definitely goes back in 180 degrees from normal. Why does this help? Is it because when its in this way it slightly touches the valve cover and the dipstick is held in place by increased friction?

My culprit is likely blow by I guess? At 46k miles I would hope that the piston rings weren't worn out in my engine. Is this normal for S2000s? Is the end all solution a rebuild (not that I'm really concerned, the engine is clearly making great power like this).

Try the 180 flip. The stick may get a little more friction in one orientation or the other. If it still pops off the you have positive pressure in the crankcase as previously noted. Change out the PCV valve. One of hese tw will fix it.....

Mine does this on occasion, since new. I think it is just the byproduct of a 4-cyl engine and its inherent vibrations. First I had the dealership replace the dipstick, but I think the better fix is keeping the o-rings and lip clean - oil is a lubricant and will block the friction that normally keeps it tight! Once the lip and o-rings on the dipstick are clean, it stays seated fine.
