I'm getting sick of this. The highest damn prices for Premium, and I get 91 octane

I want to make sure that this really is a fuel problem:

When the car is accelerating from a stop, I got up to about 15-18MPH and shift to second. If I apply generous throttle (not WOT, but enough to entice the car to move) I hear what sounds like a metal rattling or gurgling coming from the engine. I am assuming this is the engine pinging? Anyone else have this problem?

It doesn't matter on the brand of gas: Chevron, Mobil and Shell all do the same thing.

I'm beginning to think that the car is not really meant to run on 91 octane.

Does this happen all the time?

It happened to me on two occasions. The first time was when I was still in Boston on 93 octane gas, though.

Hmmm, you have the supposedly more aggressively tuned oem ecu. I wonder why the knock sensor doesn't tune this out more aggressively? Unless this isn't pinging, but I think it is...

Cali gas sux, I think we should get a petition going to get 93 or higher. My friend came down from Canada and his car ran like crap on our 91 oct.

Did you just move to cali or how long have you been using 91 Oct? You can also try octane booster, but I'm not sure on how good that would be.

it's all conspiracy! they give us lower octane gas so we get worse gas milage...damage our cars so they have to be maintained more! not to mention the crap they add in it that supposedly is good for the air! yes...I look at the bottle half-empty.

-if you engine is pinging, you should notice a momentary loss in power, very slight at the sound of the pinging. It should be as if you car misfired. Check your spark plugs, how do they look?

The reason CA went to 91oct gas is because Tosco/Union oil has a patent on 92 unleaded gas. The way around the patent was to go to 91.

Money. Why do more when you can get more for less?

I heard about some patent issue, then you would think Union 76 would have something other than 91 octane as well, but they are 91 octane also.

Anyhow, I was reading up on the patent, and apparently if they want to avoid paying, they cannot make anything above 91 octane. So we have to put up with this for at least 17 more years until the patent runs out.
