Default so i just gravity bled my brakes

im sorry for this dumb questions as i should've paid attention more to my brakes prior to bleeding. so i just gravity bled all four corners using billmans sequence; FR - FL - RL - RR and just gave them time to bleed. after bleeding, i notice my brake pedal is as stiff as a ROCK with the engine all off, but when i turn the engine on the brake pedals becomes really soft to the point where i can push it down to the floor. im pretty sure braking wise it has improved because the abs kicked in earlier than i expected, but im just wondering if its normal to hit the floor.

Did you empty and refill the master cylinder when you had a bleeder valve cracked open, or did the reservoir level get very low when one was open? You definitely have air in the system and you should never drive the car if the brake pedal goes down to the floor.

It is not normal.

You're going to need to do it again.

Make sure the reservoir stays full during the entire process and don't ever touch the pedal during the process.

You can touch the pedal to accelerate the process, but if the reservior ever runs out of fluid, you're going to have to re-do all of it.

no need to touch the pedal at all. dont do it to speed up the process either. billman performed the procedure on my car and the pedal feel came out perfect

Do NOT touch the pedal to "speed up the process." When the pedal comes back up you'll be sucking air into the open bleeder, completely defeated the purpose of bleeding your brakes. That's why the two-man bleed requires the man with the wrench to CLOSE THE BLEEDER before you lift the brake pedal.

I've done gravity bleeds and vacuum bleeds and I can't tell the difference in pedal stiffness. Done right, neither allows any air into the system. The vacuum bleed takes 1 minute per wheel versus 45, so my hand-pump vacuum is the easy choice.
