So I changed my diff oil today
...along with the engine oil and geez was I surprised. Keep in mind I have MY02 with about 3700 miles on it(seriously need to drive it more). About half are hard canyon driving and the rest freeway miles. The diff oil came out nearly black, more like a very very dark charcoal color. The drain plug had a good 1-2mm of sludge on it. I shot the drain plug with some brake cleaner to check for shavings and I found a few tiny ones, but nothing to be alarmed over.
For anyone thinking about changing at the Honda service interval I'd think twice. 2 quarts of Mobil 1 syn gear oil is cheap insurance. From now on, I'll change the diff and tranny every 7500 miles.

you only need 1 quart, you only add until the fluid starts dripping out of the fill hole.
btw have you noticed the car seems quieter in the rear end? i changed my fluid to mobil 1 75w90 at 2k miles and the fluid was dark, dark gray and smelled kind of bad.

You are right only 1 qt needed, I bought two just in case I spill some by accident. I haven't driven it yet because I'm in the process of Zaino, but I did notice the engine idled a bit quieter with fresh oil. Still can't believe how nasty the diff oil was just after 3700 miles
