T-belts suck

I have a new VW beetle at the shop. Timing belt broke at 70k. Bent all the valves. In addition, the valves are so close to the edge of the piston, it crimped the ring lands and ruined the pistons.

On topic, I do notice the OEM serp belt is very different than the universal gator type at the auto parts store. Any belt that can go 100k is worth another OEM belt in my book

billman: it's happen alot when the plastic wheel on teh water pump busted, it locks the whole shebang, it happen as low as 60k on the AEG model.

now the vw sell a metal replacement pump but there's still alot of plastic pump around discount store/ebay that owner will get a bad surprise from.

for 30 buck, i'll give the gatoback a try, so far so good, no noise, tension is good and no sign of performance loss

You should change that to 1.8t t-belts suck....

At the beginning of the week I had 4 VW Beetles at the shop at once. You can't believe the problems these things have at such low mileage.

I believe it.... dealt with the same thing on a Jetta. Had to pull pistons and rering because of the valves crimping the ring lands.

That's not quite fair comparing to a belt change on a front-wheel-driver. I replaced the three accessory belts on my old G2 integra; There was no room to get your hands in there.

celica FWD = hard to get to accesory belts.

rwd ftmfw.

otoh, a rwd (old) engine ftl! no auto tensioner, so you NEED a special tool or a pal to yank on the alternator til its tensioned.


camaro acc. belt, 10 min tops, by myself, no need to jack up the car at all
