So Honda NOW makes a gear oil
#21
Yes, the oil shown at the start of the thread is for the '06+ pilot/mdx 'transfer case' or PTO, whichever you want to call it.
Originally Honda had the ATF lubing the PTO, but the hypoid gears would shear the Z1 into oblivion in fairly short order. No wonder those autos blew up so much. They then separated the PTO from the trans when they went to the 4 shaft version of the trans.
The 90w GL5 or GL6, I've personally never seen a GL6 rated gear oil, is what Honda specs. I've been running Redline 75w90 GL5. If that oil can take the torque from my '99 Lightning with no issues, it should be fine in my S2000. I don't do hard launches with this car anyway.

The API GL6 spec never became official as the GL5 oils stepped up in quality (better additives, base oils, ect)
GL6 was intended for high offset hypoid final drives.
Wonder why Honda spec'd it for the S2000 diff?
Just think, it's really not that difficult.

As mentioned earlier.....Honda doesn't make any fluids. They only spec it and buy it.
I wouldn't get hung up on buying anything just because it's got a Honda brand.Sometimes it's great and sometimes not so much.
