Hello fellow members,

I maybe too overly concerned, but I just installed a spoon snorkel in my car las t week and I have checked inside of the oem airbox a few times. I have noticed a very small amount of sand grain/particles in both the first & second chamber. My question is: Can the sand being sucked through the snorkel (while driving at speed) have enough velocity/force to puncture through the oem filter eventually go into the engine? I think the panel that separates the two chambers would stop direct moments of particles into the filter by the way it looks. Thanks in advanced for your information.

BTW: I don't know if I am imagining it, but the car feels smoother, not stronger/faster, but alot smoother in all gears when I hit the throttle.

Mark

The snorkel will certainly catch much more crap including sand gravel. I've had mine for at least 12,000 miles with no problems to the air filter.

You WILL howver want to check the filter much more often since you will find bugs and other road crap find it's way to the box much easier now. I just use a shop vac to get it out.

Thanks ninegrand. When it rain heavily, do you find water in the airbox?

Well my car has only seen rain on the road twice and only what I would call for very long once. That said, I have not had water in the box.

I do check it/clean it out most every time I wash the car and never see any in there then either.

Rain would have to be coming down hella hard and you would need to be at a fair speed to get much if any water all the way up in the box. Even if you do hydrolock would be very rare with this CAI/airbox combo.

I have a snorkle-type intake (Aus). I have driven through some pretty big downpours, and I have never had a problem. Yes, there is a lot of sand and crap that gets in the airbox now. I also take my filter off every few weeks and knock off the sand and grit off of it, you will be surprised at the pile you will get after a few weeks.

Take a good look at how the airbox lid is designed. The little elbow that routes the air to the filter chamber in particular, has a decent gap in it at the entrance. This gap channels most of the water and heavier debris into the first airbox chamber (water trap). The air that the fliter gets does not come from the first chamber (water trap) but rather, it is routed through that plastic elbow. Any sand that has enough velocity to miss the gap and go into the elbow will have its velcocity diminished quite a bit before reaching the filter chamber. I would not worry about the sand puncturing the filter.
