i experienced the same problem.
a friend of mine stated that it's dust burning on the engine. Because we were working on the car (mounting CAI) and when for a testdrive. He said that it's dust and oil on the engine burning (dirty hands) and it went away....
Sometimes I still smell it, but that's more when the car has been in the garage for a few weeks...

Do MY01's have a "Maintenance Required" light?

edit : I've just checked in my MY00 manual and all I see is the Check Engine Light.
So are you sure you're not driving around with a CEL?

Yes, im sure its not the CEL because the CEL is green and it lights up along with every other light when ever I turn the key. But when I press the start button it goes away like every other car does. But the Mant. Req. stays on. I forgot to add I have a AEM CAI and DC headers so it could be the exhaust.

Actually the only green light on an '01 pre-ignition is the Immobilizer (Green Key). The '01 has both a Maintenance required and an Check Engeine (CEL) which are orange. My onoly question is how do you know it's not the clutch. I have a six pack waiting that says it is.

Utah

P.S. Don't fret a clutch change is fairly easy. By the way to get rid of te MR light push and hold the trip button, turn the ignition switch ON (position II) and hold the trip button for more then 10 seconds.
