Default Sludge in intake manifold

Found this and took a pic.
Wondering if its normal and what would cause this.

Thanks.

Normal. It's from the PCV flowing back into the intake manifold. This is why a lot of people use oil catch cans to "catch" the oil vapor, so it's not routed back into the intake tract.

Cool.
I should pick up a catch since I am turbo and track the car as well.
What would be good to use to clean the manifold when its off the car(cleaner type).

I think you could safely use a brake cleaner, but one of the Throttle Body cleaners will likely be safer, as it is designed to clean stubborn carbon-based deposits without stripping coatings that are on most TB's.

Other than cosmetics, is there any downside to the small buildup of residue in the pics?

BYW, I am using Lube Control (a powerful anti-oxidant) in my oil on the TL and S2000 - it has been proven to be "safe and effective" with no downsides - and everyone knows I am not an additive freak.

BTW, and off-topic, our Company is building a new $350M Research and Technology Campus, which my Team will be supporting for IT and Eng'g- 36 SOTA Labs - and new toys galore, including brand new SEM's! Yippee! More to follow. I am holding off early retirement to see this project completed, in 2007 - it is ine city block long, and will house 600+ scientists.

Hey Road Rage, your sig looks great, but can't you compress it with side by side?

Honda makes a killer throttle plate cleaner that works great. I'd try that. I'll get the part number at work tomorrow.

Sounds good
I plan to put in a thicker head gasket and will clean it out then.

Why in the world would you want to install a thicker head gasket? I'm lost on this one unless you are going forced induction and want a lower compression ratio.
