Default Slight popping when turning steering wheel

When I am at a complete stop, (usually about to reverse) I get a faint popping sound from the front.

This is not normal, correct?

It almost feels/sounds like it's coming from the rack and pinion, rather than a worn spring or something like that

(53k miles on an AP2).

Suggestions? I know the info is vague, so thanks ahead for any help.

Probably not it but when I was having a similar problem. Poping noise when turning the wheel left moving or standing still that I could also feel my lug nuts were loose. I guess someone had messed with them trying to steal my rims. Scared the hell out of me as I had driven about 100 miles with that sound trying to figure it out.

Mine does this too. '04 with 43k miles. I would like to know if everything is fine also. To me it sounds more like a ticking noise.

It's not the cv joints. At least, it shouldn't be. The popping happens randomly (I think) throughout the range of the turning of the steering wheel, not at one of the ends, like you would expect for popping of a cv joint.

I also had the car raised up and inspected a while ago, and didn't see any problems with the suspension - neither did my mechanic. Though to be fair, he isn't the best when it comes to sports cars.

Anyone ELSE also get something similar to this?

Haha, yeah, stupid me.

I guess I should retract my statement and change it to "it doesn't sound like the same kind of popping, were it to have cv joints"

It's fainter.

If it's a 00-01, I'd also check the upper A-arm mount points (fatigue crack at the spot welds).

Ugh. Sorry. Thanks for the input.

Let this be a lesson to us youngsters (I don't care who you are, under 30 is still young).
Shut the f@#k up and do a forum search first.

Learned my lesson.

Mods, Lock please. Done here.
