OK - so I tried to rotor route (gently gently) the escaped siphon hose outta there - no luck ; then I slide back the rubber protective sleeve in the trunk and disconnected the rubber hose on the fill line - hoping to find the siphon hose in there - but of course it was not there. Then I got one of these 24" pick-up tools and put it in the fill line I had opened in the trunk and tried to grab the siphon hose that way ... to no avail.

The siphon hose must have slid all the way down into the gas tank. I am sure I could get to the errant siphon hose if I took out the "rear shelf" of the car and removed the fuel pump/filter -- that would give me access to the inside of the gas tank.

I took some of the hose and put it in gasoline and let it soak and then rubbed it (it is a hard black plastic tube) on a piece of white paper. Nothing came off from the hose.

So I am not going to worry about it .

I closed everything back up , and that is that.

I hope.

Update - 8/21/04 - I finally took off the rear shelf of the car and removed the fuel pump and got that tube outta there !! For the past ten months I have been having trouble when I filled the tank - the gas would "burp" out of the filler neck after the filling was done ...

problem finally solved today !!

Great thread Defender, glad you got the tube back out, and that it caused no harm/damage.

OK, so while you were in there and had the fuel pump out, did you change the fuel filter?

Dave -- are you making it to fall colors this year ??
It's too bad you didn't have the time to plan ahead so you could change the filter at the same time. Getting to the fuel pump is such a tedious task and looking at the age of your car, it would have been nice to have gotten that job out of the way in one go. Oh well, I'm sure Billman would have said something if the filter looked real bad. (Oh, and fuel in the face - NOT fun! )
And yes, I'm sure he and I would have lots to talk about in person. Unfortunately, I'm working during that weekend of this year's Fall Colors. Would have been wonderful to re-new friendships made last year. Anyhow, you guys have a great meet and maybe we can look forward to FC '05.
