Thumbs up Should I tap my seat-bracket holes?

I recently purchased seats and harnesses and the eye-bolts that came with the "universal" harnesses are of course way to big to get in my 8x1.25 and 10x1.25 mounting holes.

I have had no luck finding hardened eye-bolts in the 8x1.25 and 10x1.25 sizes I need. I stopped by a shop in my town called Qualafab. They do a lot of machining for race applications. He said that he isn't interested in tapping those holes since he's afraid the new size will make the walls so thin that they could strip in an accident. He wasn't sure though since he rarely ever works with Hondas. He just wasn't interested in the liability.

Is he correct? Will a 12x1.00 bolt put my life in danger? Or do you guys think that tapping it and fitting those eye bolts will be fine.

Thanks!

The fact that you're asking the question is your answer.

Do it right.

this doesn't help at all, I need someone who knows if it will work or not

mounting it with these forged eye bolts would be doing it right

It all depends.
It would take a picture / drawing (for me anyway) to see what you are talking about.

Can you put a M12x1.00 nut behind it?
Just guessing here....

On the other hand, an experienced mechanic allready told you it would not work.

An experienced mechanic with racecars, he really didn't know if it would work with the honda, he just wasn't willing to try for liability reasons

Which bolt holes are you talking about? I used eyebolts in place of the factory seat BELT bolts. You don't use the eyebolts for actually mounting the seat. The factory bolts are fine or any equivilant high quality bolt.

When I installed my Sparco bracket to the floor, I just used the same factory bolts as the factory seats used. When I bolted my sub belts down, I attached them to the front two bolts and used Allen head bolts (same threads as factory) and large washers.

The eyebolt bolts WILL replace the factory belt bolt which are 12xsomething. IF you tap out the bolts, you're just asking to be ejected out of the car along with your seats.

What would you do if I said: "Ohh yeah... thats ok... do it ".
Would you take my opinion over the internet for granted?
My opinion without even looking at it.
(I wouldn't... )
Now.. if you would provide us with a picture of where that bolt goes that would help (me).

By not answering my question about the nut I think thats not going to work?

Btw.. nuts & bolts are never hardened.
Hardening makes them brittle => not good.
Stronger nuts & bolts are made of stonger, tougher steel.
Steel with a higher resistance to mechanical stress.
(thats why you should NEVER use stainless steel nuts & bolts when something really depends on it, like brakes and other safety stuff)
Another trick is to use less pitch, IOW more threads per mm.
The regular pitch of M12 is 1.75 mm.
But I guess that still doesn't answer your question.

Can you switch the bolt-in ends to clip-ins? That way you can have the fabricator weld thick backing plates with eyelets to attach to.

I wouldn't retap any seat belt mounting hole for a different size bolt.

If you plan on tracking the car, some sanctioning bodies require backup plates and the eyebolts to have 2 nuts. Not to mention a rollbar and harness bar needed to safely run aftermarket harnesses.

Read up on the harness mounting info thread in the R&C forum http://forums.s2ki.com/forums/showthread.p...threadid=143847
