should I get a transmission jack adaptor?

...or do people just 'bench press' the transmission out?
I'm going to swap in an AP2 transmission plus new clutch and flywheel in a couple weeks. I may grab some taller jackstands to get some better clearance under the car, but wondering if I should also grab a special adaptor to cradle the transmission when I bring it out (and put it back in).
Thanks in advance for any comments.

A harbor freight special could be a big help if you are doing the job solo. When removing a trans with the car on jackstands I'll let gravity help me out.
I can put the trans back in without a jack, but it's easier with a friend to help you support the trans while you do the big wiggle to get the mainshaft pushed through the clutch disc.
I've also found that if the trans is almost all the way in but not flush with the block, use a prybar to pull back on the clutch fork and engage the clutch. The trans will push in flush with the block no problem.

Cool, thanks for the comments guys. South of the border, you have Harbor Freight, we Canadians have Princess Auto!

But regardless, I think all the crap is made in China anyway...![smile.gif](https://www.s2ki.com/forums/images/smilies/smile.gif)
There's a sale next week on the transmission jack adaptors, and on the taller jackstands too, so I may just grab all that stuff.

If you can get a tranny jack do it, but balancing it on a shop jack wasn't hard for me. The transmission isn't terribly heavy.
I just balanced mine on my jack, but it has a pretty wide pad.

It is if you are trying to "bench press" it underneath the car.
