Default Should I do the Ap2 Tranny swap?

I have an 02 and the tranny is noisy as hell, it has the bearing/gearbox whine and its a little notchy sometimes..

Im debating weather to do the AP2 tranny swap or try some dynamat and maybe getting a short shifter and regrease to take away the noise and notchiness.. What do you guys think?

Do the swap. Your bearings are going out. Mine have gone out on two AP1 boxs.

no, do some research on it. There is a good amount different in the ap2 vs ap1 transmission. The ap2 trans is a large upgrade, espeically for a NA car. Shorter 1-4 and longer 5 and 6. Stronger synchros as well.

I am in the same exact boat. I like the feling of the ap2 trans. They feel better then the ap1 in my opinion. I have driven my friends ap2 and it feels smoother.

Rebuild or ap2 tranny is how I'd go.

When factoring in total reduction, (whats actually coming out of the tail of the trans) 1-5th is shorter. Only 6th is taller.

Still a nice mod.

Just did this swap on my 00. Love it. The daily driving was nicer, and it made autocrossing really fun having a little more oomph.

I believe the actual gears 1-4 are actually the same AP1 to AP2, with 5-6 taller. The primary reduction is shorter on the AP2, which makes 1-5 effectively shorter and 6th taller. The PRR on the AP1 is 1.16 vs 1.208 on the AP2. The effective 5th gear ratio is 1.14 on the AP2 and 1.13 on the AP1...very close.

I've been told to stay away from this swap if I'm turbo'd. Can anyone tell me why?
