shifting ino reverse
this is the second s2000 that i know that does this. MY buddy has an AP1 with 54000 miles on it and it will shift into reverse without pushing down on the shifter. this is really a big pain when you are trying ot shift into 6th and it keeps trying to go into reverse. Mine is an Ap1 with and Ap2 tranny with only 3500 miles on the tranny, and does the sme thing.
I tried to search but all i found was hard shifting into reverse, and mine will shift just fine.

It sounds like it is stuck in the down position.
Billman and hecash have good information here:

thanks guys. there is also alot of play in the shifter when it is in any gear. I can wiggle it ll over the place in gear.
and yes it really sucks doing 70 on the highway and then you start grinding gears because your car is trying to go into reverse.

I bet if you pulled the shifter out, the plastic holder is messed up. It takes 10 minutes to pull if you want to check. It comes out into the cabin once you pull the console.

Mine does the same thing. the spring isnt broken b/c it still pushes down like it should and i cant pull it up at all, but it will go over into reverse with out pushing it down.
i'll have it apart this weekend to see whats going on in there.
