Default Shifter Clunk

It turns out that there are plastic or nylon parts in the shifter that can crack. I don't know which ones to replace so I guess I'll order everything. I found a post for re-greasing the shifter which is nice....

Also, I saw where Spoon makes a shifter replacement with a metal end.

I would think that the nylon collar and the nylon tip are a good place to start.

I think parts 7 and 8 are what I need.

Has anyone done this to get rid of the clunk sound? Mine now clunks going into 2nd,4th and 6th.

I don't think a body shop would touch it, a mechanic would.. Probably charge you an hours labor for 15mins of work...

I think I found the clunk. The boot holder B pn 54107-S2A-003 is cracked. I have one on order. This should fix it.

I think clunking is just a natural sound of this transmission, and many others out there. I noticed it got louder when I switched to a heavier shift knob, unless it was my imagination ?.

I've done everything to my setup to keep it maintained, not necessarily to reduce noise as it doesn't really bother me. I replaced the nylon piece B in the illustration as mine was cracked, I've lubed the shifter a couple times, new fluid regularly, and I still have the noise. But like I said it doesn't bother me as long as the tranny works as designed, and mine shifts flawlessly at 55k miles for a 2002 ap1.

My clunk may not be what your clunk is. Mine has a plastic sound. When I removed the boot and holder, my clunk went away. I have reassembled it until my parts come in.
I am going to do a shifter lube at that time also.

My car still shifts great at 172000 miles.

okay see how it goes with the new parts, good luck with it. To get part B to slide on easier I placed it in a small plastic bag and dropped it in some boiling water for a bit and then pushed it onto the shifter.
