You have an AP2 which will typically not crack the retainers

would a mild mis shift from 5th-2nd affect the valves as well? same thing happened to me except the car didn't over rev. A friend of mine drove it around 31 MPH in 5th and mistakenly put it in 2nd. The car engine braked for a bit and he put it in neutral after. I saw the whole thing happen and the RPM only reached 8k. is this bad?
Few thousand miles and a lota hard runs have already past after the incident and nothing bad happened, car seems to run in tip top shape. maybe i'm just getting paranoid after reading this whole thread?

8k rpm's in 2nd gear at 31 mph? Did you alter your gearing? That seems very odd as ap1's usually hit +55 mph redlining 2nd gear. Even with gearing that's way too low. Anyhow, if you were going that slow and downshifted to 2nd without going over 9k you're car is fine. No need to worry.
Thanks though for all the replies, it gave me peace of mind.

mmm, it should be fine. But I would not make a habit of hard non-revmatched downshifts, especially with an AP1. I am going to speculate that most of the time the retainers are not damaged from the act of going beyond x rpms, they are damaged from the shock of the rpms jumping suddenly.
An overrev will directly damage the valve itself from floating it into the piston, this can happen just as easily with both an AP1 and an AP2. Some engines such as the newer model year 04+ K20a2s had different valve springs in an attempt to mitigate this, but to my knowledge there was no change like this from the F20 to the F22, just a change in the retainers (someone please correct me if I am wrong).
The retainers in an AP1 are pretty scary IMO, because I would bet that a tracked AP1 that has seen a couple of poorly matched downshifts (or even one unlucky one for that matter) could have a cracked retainer or two, making the car a ticking time bomb.
ap1 tot, I would say you SHOULD be ok, it would be pretty unlucky to crack a retainer from an event like that. To say that because you did not overrev you are deffinately good to go, is not correct IMO. If you want to know for sure you can always take the valve cover off an take a look. I think by looking you can have a pretty good idea if the retainers are damaged.
