Only real issue should be the gasket. It will eventually lose elasticity, which means the oil filter might be more likely to spin itself off the engine.

But if you keep it cool, dry, and out of the light, it should be fine for years.

I wouldn't use one that I knew was 12 years old, though. Five or six years of storage would be about the limit where I would feel comfortable putting it onto the car.

For the S2000 I've used:
Shell syn 5W-40 for .. (I didn't write it down, it was in the engine when I bought it)
Shell syn 0W-40 for 6700 miles (was too short but wanted to use a 30 weight - UOA was good)
Shell syn 0W-30 for 12300 miles (good UOA)
Valvoline (1/2 syn) 5W-30 is in it now, 6800 miles and counting.
I've bought a case of Amsoil SSO 0W-30 and allthough I "can't wait" to use it I think its a waste to dump the Valvoline allready.
The Amsoil will go in before winter for sure.

Even if someone truly "qualifies" to use the severe schedule, IMO a 3k mile OCI is a waste of oil and not necessary.
Even the cheapest dino today is API SL or SM and way better than what was available in 1999.

5k miles in the S2k / RSX for a true syn is throwing away money IMO.
Even a "Mobil 1" syn will go the distance, a UOA will confirm it no doubt.
With the distance I mean 7500 miles, at least, to start with.

5k miles on cheap dino should be checked with a UOA, you could probably go longer.

Oils are pretty good today, even the dino's that shear down into 20 weight range.

Most important for the majority is piece of mind.
UOA's will give you that too, btw.

The 3k mile OCI myth will never die.

edit: Valvoline FE IS a half syn or blend.
Thanks spitfire! I don't like to order oil because I usually end up changing it with short notice when I can use my buddys lift. Is there any store bought sny oil you recommend over Mobile 1? Also for a "non sports car" like my wifes RSX do you agree with my decision to use dino oil ever 5k? Her manual says normal driving it can be done ever 7500 with dino, but in Miami we get a lot of high heat days with lots of stop and go traffic and short trips, etc. Thanks!

Yes, but get EP, it's only a couple bucks more and has a significantly better add pack

Placebo effect works quite well for me.
Placebo as in: you change it anyways or you pretend you've changed it?

Note to members: spit lives in a very cold environment
The climate in the Netherlands is not cold, its a sea climate.
The only US climate I can relate it too is coastal northern CA (Humboldt County) and that was pretty simular.
Last morning it was 10C here and 22C in the afternoon.
top down

you don't need (or want) a 0 weight oil in the summer in most of the U.S., 10w-30 is perfectly fine.
If you would have said 5W-30 I would have agreed.
There are 5W-30's that are thicker at lets say 25C than 10W-30 oils.
0W-30's are thinner across the temp range (not German Castrol 0W-30) and a thinner-when-cold-oil is never bad IMO.
Maybe more expensive, but you can use them longer.

I wonder if there a production date printed on the filters.
Worth finding out

If you buy a 12 year old 15400-PCX-004 from a Honda dealer that should be an original JDM Toyo Roki one!
Keep it => collectors item

Is there any store bought sny oil you recommend over Mobile 1?
I'm not that familiar with what's available in the US.
Maybe Valvoline Synpower XL-III 5W-30?
(just an example!! )

I'm NOT an oil expert.
An oil enthusiast at best.

Also for a "non sports car" like my wifes RSX do you agree with my decision to use dino oil ever 5k? Her manual says normal driving it can be done ever 7500 with dino, but in Miami we get a lot of high heat days with lots of stop and go traffic and short trips, etc. Thanks!
There was a topic about high heat and oil choice on BITOG today and the knowledgabe people overthere say the outside heat does nothing to today's engine oil, including dino.
I would stick to the manual ( = 7500 miles) and with the money you save you can do an UOA.
You'll be surpriced how good oils are now.
