i had a quick question, sorry its a noob question but im going to buy around 12 honda oil filters what is the shelf life on the filters themselves? there just gunna be stored in my garage. sorry for the dumb question but i dont know if its wise to buy bulk or 1 at a time.

Hey, whats up man!

The shelf life, will be almost indefinite if you store it in a dry place. In hawaii, that means get it out of the humidity. The filters come shrink wrapped too though, so it should be fine. I'm almost certain that dealerships/parts stores/etc store filters for as long as it doesnt sell...No real expiration date. 12 filters, @ a rate of 1 per oil change @ 3K miles = 4 per year = 3 years to use up. Sounds like a ok rate, I think.

Or you could just sell it in hawaii to S2Ki guys

Used on a DD car 12 filters should be good for 12 years.
Its 2009.

Sorry to threadjack, but spitfire I'm interested in how often you change your oil? I've come to respect your opinion from all the other posts you've made over the years. Currently I'm changing my s2000 (2004 with 58k miles) every 5,000 miles with Syntethic oil and my wife's RSX (2002 with 95k miles) every 5,000 miles but with regular oil. I used to do syntethic on hers but I think it's a waste. It's an automatic and she does nothing but drive it back and forth to work, no real spirited driving or anything.

For the S2000 I've used:
Shell syn 5W-40 for .. (I didn't write it down, it was in the engine when I bought it)
Shell syn 0W-40 for 6700 miles (was too short but wanted to use a 30 weight - UOA was good)
Shell syn 0W-30 for 12300 miles (good UOA)
Valvoline (1/2 syn) 5W-30 is in it now, 6800 miles and counting.
I've bought a case of Amsoil SSO 0W-30 and allthough I "can't wait" to use it I think its a waste to dump the Valvoline allready.
The Amsoil will go in before winter for sure.

Even if someone truly "qualifies" to use the severe schedule, IMO a 3k mile OCI is a waste of oil and not necessary.
Even the cheapest dino today is API SL or SM and way better than what was available in 1999.

5k miles in the S2k / RSX for a true syn is throwing away money IMO.
Even a "Mobil 1" syn will go the distance, a UOA will confirm it no doubt.
With the distance I mean 7500 miles, at least, to start with.

5k miles on cheap dino should be checked with a UOA, you could probably go longer.

Oils are pretty good today, even the dino's that shear down into 20 weight range.

Most important for the majority is piece of mind.
UOA's will give you that too, btw.

The 3k mile OCI myth will never die.

edit: Valvoline FE IS a half syn or blend.

^I totally agree with you spit, that 3K is too early to change the oil - but for some reason I just have that itching to do it every few months. Placebo effect works quite well for me.

i have some filters i bought in 2004, i still use them, i have one left, they have been perfect, shrink wraped, and come with a new crush washer, my dealer had a special shortly after i bought my car.

i use chevron 10/30 from costco by the case andchange oil every 4-6 months or 4-5,000 miles, it works for me, i have another car.

I'm changing mine every 4k miles (Amsoil ATM) until it hits 20k, from then on it will at least double, and I'll start checking UOAs. Note to members: spit lives in a very cold environment, you don't need (or want) a 0 weight oil in the summer in most of the U.S., 10w-30 is perfectly fine.

Of course, I run the M1-104 filter (and never have any "loosening" issues), not the OEM piece of crap
