Thanks for all the suggestions. I will replace the compressor when I get a chance and then take it to a pro so they can fill it and monitor while doing so. It is very possible the compressor failed mechanically as it did not sound right even when not engaged. I guess I will find out when I remove it.
I guess I have to be thankful that this is a non-essential part.

Good tip! I generally forget to label or take photos before starting and then end up dealing with a code. I called the dealership and they wanted $114 for the belt. Of course, they wanted $4200 to replace the soft top so I guess they just mark up everything 3-400%.

Well, I ended up taking my S to my trusty mechanic, who replaced my compressor with a used one I got on eBay. Filled the system and everything worked fine. I took a trip up to Skyline Drive this weekend and so far so good. Not sure what the issue is, but hopefully I can get a few more years out of the system as-is.

That's a new high...guess that's VA for ya. It really isn't a very hard job, and OEM tops run around $750.
