Red face Selling or disassembling?

Hey guys,

A while back my s2000's bearings broke, mechanic (my brother). He replaced the bearings and they broke again, we stated that the crankshaft needs to be cut. He doesnt want to fix it for me because taking out the tranny to acces the crankshaft is too much work. Also he notified me rust is starting to form within the engine so it is better to sell it. Everything else works fine, clutch, transmission etc. So I am wondering if i should disassemble the parts and sell them on ebay or try to sell it as a whole? I live in the netherlands and have little knowledge of cars. The only thing i have done myself is replacing the alternator. Would disassembling the car for parts be possible for someone with my experience? or is it better to sell, and if i should sell it for how much should i... it has 120.000 km and is right hand drive imported from england.

P.S. my brother does not want to help with disassembly

Any ethical or moral obligations aside (yea...), what does that statement even mean?

Get the car fixed properly, sell it at the right price. Or get the car fixed properly, and enjoy it yourself afterwards. Taking shortcuts left and right seem to be a problem here -- do things the right way.

I cant afford the repairs for coming months. I dont want to sell it as a good car and scam people. I want to sell it as a damaged or parts car

Sorry man, it's not a good situation to be in. We can't do the math for you -- you need back-of-the-napkin calculations for:
  • Sell entire car as-is
  • Part out? Only really feasible if you DIY and have the time/space/tools/knowledge (and time is money)
  • Fix car, and sell once fixed
  • Fix car, and drive it
How much did you pay for the car?

With the bearing/engine damage, how much do you really expect to make back from parting it out?

Your car, even with a bad engine is worth more than 3K. I would do some research before posting it for sale. Good luck.

Lol, what? Wheel bearings? I have friends with over 200,000 kms on their AP1s and their cars are still running great! Where is the rust coming from? I'd find an S2000 specialist and get them to look at it. I know there are a few Netherland members on s2k, maybe they can refer youi; check the European community here.

I think he is talking about rod or crank bearings.
If the options you are considering are to either sell the entire car or part it out, given your stated lack of experience with mechanical repairs, my advice is to sell it with full disclosure and put it behind you.

And, no offense to your brother, but you may want to get a 2nd opinion on what the problems are. It might be easier to fix than you think. Good luck!

with your lack of money and knowledge, sell it with full disclosure of the engine problems.

i also recommend getting a second opinion, since your brother attempted a fix that did not fix it, he may not know the exact problem, which may or may not be small.
