This morning when heading to work I started hearing a pretty loud screeching sound at speeds under 10mph. It sounded like metal on metal friction and was coming from the right rear wheel. I immediately drove to the dealer and, of course, the sound stopped about two minutes before I arrived.
The service manager said it was probably a rock that was lodged somewhere in the wheel/brake and that he has seen this before. Have any of you had this problem? Should I be concerned?
FYI: There seems to be no ill effects at this point (no vibration, no sound, no smell, etc)
Thanks.

Intermittent problems always disappear before you take the car to your mechanic and always reappear right after you've been there.
The place you took it to has a really bogus explanation and should have just told you if it happens again to bring it in. A rock couldn't get lodged anywhere for more than a second.
A bad bearing is a possibility.

Yep, could well be a rock. I also recently fixed a metal-on-metal problem where the splash shields on the rear wheels were being rubbed by the rotors. Apparently I had bent them in when changing tires and not being careful enough to prevent the wheel from making contact with the shield...

I had the same problem a few days ago.... Mine disappeared after driving no more then 2 miles.... Also, when I first start to drive my car in the morning I here a lil clunky noise.... I'm guessing its the bearing, but I'm going to a mechanic today and I'll ask them what they have to say about it.

:Edit: I also have a question for you guys.... If it is a bearing.... what would that set me back? and can I change it out myself?

Be careful... I had the same problem and I thought it was brakes (I've been known to warp some rotors). When I checked the brakes they were fine. Turns out drivers side rear bearing developed an extremely loose fit over the corresponding driveshaft/axle. I will be replacing both for big bucks
. If anyone has heard of this before or has any advice on aftermarket solutions please respond.
