Default Saw oil light briefly at idle during stop light: down to last quart of oil

Recently had an engine drop to replace my old ap1..... It didn't burn oil but this new ap1 does or maybe the mechanic put non synthetic in.

Saw the oil light briefly click on then quickly off at 2 stop lights and just filled immediately.

It was just below L on the dip stick.

Did I permanently damage my car a ton and toast a new engine or merely reduce its life by a few thousand miles and consider myself lucky? Car runs fine otherwise.

I got used to meticulously checking oil but my old one never burned oil much and got lazy.

I'd watch the oil consumption & see if it starts to get worse. You may want to think about doing an analysis of some used oil.

Good luck with that!

If it just comes on at idle, I wouldn't worry to much. I would also put a mechanical pressure gauge on the car to see what the oil pressure really is. A thick 10/40 would give you more pressure at idle and at the upper rpm's.

But also wouldn't flow as well, which is what actually lubricates. But its probably not a bad idea to use slightly thicker oil with an old worn down motor. The F series kind of straddles the crossing point of where that philosophy stopped being true. Newer engines have tighter tolerances than the F series so they need lighter oils. Also our forged components have more heat expansion than cast parts, probably why they allow a 40 weight.

In any case the best course of action is to find an oil and stick to it. This seems to limit consumption more than anything. It doesn't make sense but I'm willing to bet I'm not the only one that's noticed this.

The problem with the oil light is if you saw it idle, did it also come on when you were in vtec, but focused on the road so didn't notice it?

That is where you could be fine now, but have an issue down the road. Get the oil analysis done for the oil that is in there now.
