Default Samco silicone coolant hose permeation

I'm adding 50/50 as the coolant levels go down but should I be adding more water than antifreeze because of this?

Is this coolant okay, with Honda engines? I've always used Honda approved OEM fluid.

I don't think he means 50/50 Brand coolant, but rather a mix of half coolant, half water (and its probably Honda coolant at that).

His question is when silicone hoses 'leak' coolant through permeation into the air,is it allowing mostly water to permeate, or is it allowing both coolant and water to pass?

Because if it mostly allows water only, then he needs to add mostly water back in when he tips off, otherwise his mix ratio over time will shift towards too much coolant, and he could end up overheating and destroying his motor (as most of the actual cooling properties come from the water, not the inappropriately named 'coolant', which mostly provides antifreeze, lubrication, and sealing qualities).

How much much coolant are you loosing?
I wouldn't mix it out further without checking, I haven't tried one of those cheap coolant testers (refractometer) but those should hopefully work.

when I had those hoses I always smelled coolant and I hated it, if I had known they exhibited permeation issues I never would have run them. If you smell coolant then it is likely leaking more than just water through the permeation process. I would add the pre-mixed Honda coolant as needed, too much water may cause corrosion , a cheap tester may be a good idea though.

I’m bit confused - it seems based on this thread that silicone hoses permeate, thus lose fluid over time. Is there an advantage to this type of hose over OEM?

(legitimately asking).

When I did the switch I thought I was getting a hose that had a much longer service life, more flexible/less brittle, higher burst rate etc., plus they look damn good too I didn't know about the permeation issue until I got them installed. Just one more thing that may work well in the racing world, but at the end of the day oem hoses are plenty fine for a street driven S2000.

For a street car I don't think there is an advantage over OEM, aside from maybe the aesthetics if you are in to those things

Spoon radiator hoses are thicker rubber and won't have coolant smell.
