Harnesses are such a complicated subject!
CoralDoc had an excellent reply.
If you have your heart set on a harness go for a 5-pt or 6-pt. if you have to have a harness, and replace your stock seat with a real race seat.
I have seen lots of crash sled videos, and believe me; a 4-pt harness will really allow you to submarine in a frontal impact. If you don't know what that is, think about your body sliding out from under the seat belt and you body gets stuffed into the foot well. A 5 or 6-pt harness has a crotch strap(s) and prevents this. However, a 5 or 6-pt harness needs a hole cut into the bottom center of the seat as the safest way to mount them and then that too is a complication...
Ironically a lap belt is a darn good restraint. Your pelvis is held tight to the seat, as your upper body flies forward it only pushes your pelvis deeper back into the seat, basically creating the opposite effect from submarining.

after being in a roll-over accident, I'd much rather be in a car with a properly mounted 5 point or 6 point harness system than a stock 3 point system. You simply move around too much in a rollover with the 3 point system which increases chances of injury.
