I have heard of gas going bad over time. Gas could absorb moisture.
Its inside a sealed gas container, how can it get moisture?

Moisture tends to get in in the form of condensation same with brake systems. Neither is air tight, the gas cap is not air tight and I doubt the fuel line connections are either. Humidity in the air gets into the tank on warm humid and condensates on the cold walls of the tank to become water, this is a bigger problem if you store the car with an empty tank.

I have no idea who these guys are but they write for the Washington Post, the information seems consistent with what I have found in real life.

I would take it easy until you think you have less than a quarter of the stored gas left in the tank and then fill it with the good stuff and maybe some fuel system cleaner. You should be fine after that. All petroleum products break down over time unless they have additives to delay this process. Use something like Stabil next time you store the car.

With the changes in gasoline formulation starting in 2006, your last load probably has 5 to 10 percent ethanol content. Ethanol attracts water over time. After about 3 months in a calm environment, the ethanol and base gasoline can separate from one another and stratify along with any water that may be present. It would be best exercise caution and burn through the existing tank.

So far I'm doing good. I'm done with 1/3 of the tank. Today I was following a semi truck which was carrying mulch, and small pieces were falling off the truck. I decided to pass it, I hit almost 5500 rpms in 6th while passing, but other than that, I've been behaving.

any driving you've done has been sloshing that gas around and stirred it up pretty well, just vtec and be done with it already!

my old 64 1/2 mustang with a beefed up high compression v8 sat in my driveway motionless for over 2 years with a tank of 93 and it fired right up and couldnt have cared less that I was dogging the hell out of it when I finally drove it again on that tank of gas.

Is there rationale for the recommendations or are you guys just erring on the side of caution?

Not being a smart A** but a genuine question.
Caution but as the same time, why not mash throttle on fresh gas.
