is it safe to drive 30-40 miles with duct tape over the oil filler cap, or maybe napkins taped over it.

I'd consider it decent.
I've had my OEM oil cap mysteriously screw it's self out twice. The second time I couldn't find the cap anymore. I went to Autozone and bought one for temporally fix. I ended up keeping the Autozone one and haven't had a problem a year now.

dear macguyver, i have a honda s2000. the oil cap is lost. i have enclosed a drinking straw, a paper clip, and a rubber band. please help.
just kidding
hope you got it figured out.
i would try taping something solid to it, instead of a sock. like, cut a butter lid or something.
