I rebuilt the motor and finally have it back together. Problem now is I cannot get it to start. I have spark to all cylinders, fuel pressure to the rail, and compression in all cylinders. It turns over, but cannot get going. It will get going and get off the starter and I let go of the ignition, it fires a couple weak time and stops.

I threw in a fresh set of plugs and turned it over a few times. I removed the plugs and 1,2,3 looked brand new. 4 was black and soaked in fuel. Would this be an indication that injectors are not working right? Either 1-3 have no fuel, or 4 is stuck on?

What else could be up? I have checked all connections multiple times and since I have the required ingredients to run, I am confused.

What injectors are you running?

Are you sure you got your timing correct? Had a camshaft off one tooth and it did the same thing.

Running stock injectors. I've done the timing three times, but I can check again. One tooth is an aweful big difference in alignment of the lines as I recall.

Is there any chance your crank sensor is bad? The guys who fixed my car told me a bad crank sensor could do it too. I'd personally wait for someone with more experience.

Try switching injectors around. If the injector for Cylinder 4 is stuck open and you switch it with say, Cylinder 3, the cylinder 3 spark plug should turn black and become soaked.

That should tell you if you got a plug that isn't firing or a stuck fuel injector.

EDIT: it might be simpler to switch plugs and coils between cylinders than to swap the injectors, but the principle is the same

With the camshaft being a tooth or so off caused the same problem with my build had me stressing for a couple days till we worked it out give it a check, worth a try.

the two things i've know to cause this are not connecting the ground to the back of the head or having the cams installed 180 degrees out. try removing the cams, turn the motor over til the tdc marking on the crank pulley lines up again and reinstall the cams. I made this mistake the first time i pulled my head off. Only issue was the marking on the main cam gear didn't line up because i didn't feel like removing the tct and re-aligning the gear.

Friend had a similar issue when he did the timing chain on his Saturn... I went and listened to the car and the car did want to run by listening to it, fire a few time and die.. (assuming yours does too)... I had him hold the pedal down when he started it. Basically with all the cranking he had flooded the motor so bad it just couldn't burn it all off to stay running. He had to hold the car at 3gs for about a minute while a steady stream of unspent fuel fumes came out the back of the car... Pretty funny to see, car ran great after that.
