Default S2000 Start up problems

When i turn my key to on push down on the clutch and press the start button, my starter makes and clunk noise like the starter got stuck and does not crank the engine. if i press and depress the clutch while holding down the engine start button like 3-5 times then it will crank and turn over the engine. i checked the wires for the starter and they have good contact. i have a new starter and i have an oddessy pc680 battery. im thinking the smaller battery might have something to do with it. not enough juice to push the starter. wondering if anyone else has had this problem and if it be something else. thanks.
