Default s2000 owners manual reguarding engine coolant

in the s2000 owners manual it says "Always use genuine honda antifreeze/coolant,continued use of any non-honda coolant can result in corrosion, causing the cooling system to malfunction or fail ,have the cooling system flushed and refilled with honda antifreeze/coolant as soon as possible,

is this a bunch of garbage ?

If you use Honda coolant you won't have any issues with your cooling system, it is really good stuff. The previous owner of my car left the coolant in for 9 years and there wasn't a single deposit or scale to be found anywhere in the radiator. Also some aftermarket coolants used to have high levels of silicates which wasn't good in Hondas. There are some good aftermarket coolants, but the Honda stuff is really good and I don't find it all that expensive for long term protection. I would never mix different fluids , if you top off your coolant use the Honda stuff.

The manual speaks the truth. use honda coolant. ok, you'll spend around $40 for 2 bottles. so what? what is peace of mind? you think prestone is better? you think all those internet trolls know better than honda?

Friend of mine bought a used EM1 and the previous moronic owner used dexcool weeks before. within weeks of taking ownership, the head gasket decided to give up. the Honda tech i race with who then fixed the EM1 said, use honda coolant. how hard can it be?

do what you like. its not my car. just remember this- honda chemists and engineers aren't stupid. Honda fluids for honda cars.

I agree!

You'll likely hear from folks who use other brands and say they're fine but for $40 every 10 years I'm sticking with the Honda antifreeze

Check out the fluid and rad after you dump it, you might be surprised how good it looks. Post up your findings.

Based on what I've seen over the last 30 years on other vehicles and the S2000 over 13 of those years, Honda Type2 blue is the only coolant I'll ever use. In 10 years it will be as clean as the day you put it in.

There are no American cars that I have ever known that can do this. In 30k miles the cooling system a are full of garbage.

Hence why you never see an S2000 heater core corode out.

Is there any reliable way to determine the condition of your coolant? I have a 2002 with one previous owner. No maintenance records but it seems to be well taken care of. Coolant looks very clean - I would like to think it was changed at the 10yr mark when the PO had it but I have no way to tell.

Just a caution over the term you used: "flush". Some see that meaning using a garden hose and house water to flush out the old coolant and then add new. Do not do that. The hard water will not completely drain and will contaminant the new fluid. If you are doing a flush, use distilled water.

I agree with pretty much with what everyone has said so far. However to add to that Honda also claims that their Type 2 coolant is good "for the lifetime of the car" or something along those lines - even if the manual specifies the 100,000/10 yr service interval.

My wife's Honda surely has the original coolant in it when purchased in 2003... since she doesn't give a fawk about her car. But when I checked her fluids before our holiday road trip this year it was nice and bright blue, very clean. 180k miles.
