S2000 noise at 2-3000 rpm on deceleration
Hi guys,
I recently bought a 1999 S2000 with 67000 miles on the clock. The problem I have is that there is a noise, the noise only comes after the car is fully warm. it sounds like the exhaust rubbing against the floor of the car, I have been under it and there seems plenty of clearance everywhere and all the heat shields seem ok. It only happens between 2-3000 rpm mainly on deceleration, if I touch the throttle slightly the noise goes. You can feel the noise slightly through the seat and it sounds like it's coming from somewhere behind to me. It seems to do it in every gear, however, if you put it in 3rd down a hill it's at its worst. I bought the car from a dealer and he's not being too helpful! Anyone has any ideas it would be gratefully received.

Sounds like it could be clutch buzz?
The earlier models had older model clutches that had weak springs and caused an odd noise that most S2000 owners refer to as clutch buzz. There is a TSB on it from Honda I believe.
There is LOTS of info on this issue as it is very common. I'm sure if you search around you can find everything you need to know.
Basically the only rememdy is to replace the clutch disc with a newer model. The pressure plate should be fine if I remember correctly.
Mine had this same problem and I upgraded to a newer disc and the noise went away just as promised. If you don't end up replacing it though, don't worry, it's not actually detrimental to anything, its just an annoying sound, lol.

Thanks for that guys. Seems very strange that a clutch can do this, if I hadn't read this along with a load of other threads I'd have never believed it. We went out in it again last night, my partner drove so I could listen. It definitely sounds like it's coming from behind and not up front where the clutch is. But I've read that some how the noise travels along the drive train making it sound like its coming from the back-weird! We gave good money for the car so I'm going to try and get a clutch from the dealer, the noise drives me crazy too!!

You're probably right but not sure I can do that, I'm a bit of a nerd with things like this. The car is really nice and quiet with this one exception. As there's a chance I can get it replaced for free I think I'll try.

My '00 had the buzz on deceleration pretty bad. I finally got tired of people asking me, "What the *&^( is wrong with your car?" and replaced the clutch disk. It fixed the problem.
I'm sure the degree of the problem varies from car to car. Mine rattled and buzzed as badly as anything GM slapped together in their darkest days.

I like the car a lot so I'm sure this problem will have to be resolved sooner or later, one way or the other.
