^^ Yes I realize blocks are not being manufactured anymore. Whatever new blocks are available in inventory are the only new ones left. Perhaps I am naive to think there are any stock blocks left for sale, I'm really not sure.

There's plenty of running engines out there. Some low mileage in really good condition. As long as they're maintained and not boosted these engines are very reliable. I wouldn't hesitate to put a 70k mile engine in my car if I know where it came from.

I'm convinced, need a whole engine. Will keep my eyes open.

Cylinder 2 is on the right - this is the really blown cylinder. Cleaned up cylinder 3 on the left for comparison. No salvaging, it all looks pretty shot.

.... This project is put on hold due to achilles injury, and re-rupture that forced me into surgery .....

In the meantime, I am seeking a bit of advice:

1) I've been poking around for a long block. E-bay seems to have the most to select from, but I am weary of dropping $3-4k on a used block from an anonymous supplier. I emailed a seller yesterday that has an '05 long block with 85k miles on it for $3k. It looks clean in the pictures, yet we know the proverbial saying. Any suggestions on sourcing an affordable engine?

2) The other conundrum is that my garage is detached from the house and has no heating or insulation. Working on the car in sub-40 temperatures is out of the question. My physical condition could very well force this project to next Spring. If I happen to run across a deal that I cannot turn down, the engine may have to remain in the shipping crate in my shed over the winter (garage has limited space). This would offset any time-based guarantee. Should the availability and/or used quality of S2K engines be a factor in this decision, in other words, should I jump on deal if I see one?

3) I would like to find the same model year engine replacement, but I think an '04 and '05 are the same; '03 was the last 2.0L, and I believe '06 went drive-by-wire. Were there any design tweaks incorporated into the '05 as result of '04 engine real-world performance?

Thanks

TAE has a good reputation, many people here have gotten engines from them, as have I. They're pretty good for the most part. If you're a shady Ebay seller your reputation score will reflect that. You never mentioned what MY car you have, the 04 05 engines are probably the easiest swap into an AP1, you can even use your AP1 ECU, but it's recommended that you use the ECU if it comes with the engine. Don't want to rev a 2.2 to 9,000rpm, not gonna do you any good, plus there's small tweaks as far as ignition timing.

Yeah sorry... I have 2005 AP2. I'd like to find an '05 long block, but an '04 would probably be just as good. That was the gist of my question.

I also agree on shady ebayer aspect of this. That makes sense, I'm just a bit more leary when it comes to a used, potentially abused S2K engine.

Thanks, I will check out TAE.
