Default S2000 and i-VTEC?

I was reading the engineering tech column in SCC about whether or not adding a thicker head gasket to the S2000 advanced cam timing.

They went through all the calculations and what-not and basically concluded that a 2.5mm gasket would advance the cams 2.9 degrees...

But then they said that only the exhaust would be affected as the S2000 has i-VTEC on the intake cam and that the ECU would make up for the gasket.

Now, all I know about the S2000 makes me think this is false and they are in for a (maybe nasty) surprise when they build up their stock S2000.

Another issue with their S2000 project car. It said that the S2000's retainers suck (they do) but that the issue is the springs chew through them. I don't think this is the case as I thought the issue was the retainers splitting from the inside over time. I don't think any issues arise due to the springs chewing through the metal. Am I wrong?

For an enthusiast mag, SCC doesn't seem to know much about the S2000. Perhaps their project S2000 will change that.

I read that also. I'm surprised they could make such a big goof up considering it's one of their project cars.

Yeah, I saw that too. There are some screw ups in the math calc too. Last time I checked 2PIR^2 isn't the circumference of a circle (2PIR is though).

I think they're setting themselves up for failure on that head.

I am more surprised they would say the s2000 has i-vtec (and also saying it is only on one cam). I guess everyone can learn something with a little research.

They are wrong, and it's not the 1st time. SCC is usually more correct than Superstreet though.

Write em' a letter and maybe they will print the correction.

the i-VTEC cars (TSX, Si, and RSX-S) DO only have i-VTEC on one cam.

They have VTEC on both cams, but the VTC (the "i") is intake-only.

This is correct considering I've had a TSX and an RSX-S

On both cams.
No "i"

The only "i" on a S2000 is..... (there isn't any )
Maybe on your number plate.

I always thought the "i" in "i-VTEC" stood for "intelligent"

Exactly what I thought, in fact I had a quick debate with someone the other day who was convinced it stood for integrated.

I still think mind made more sense
