Ridiculously Low Gas Mileage

Ridiculously Low Gas Mileage
Before you guys flame me, I attempted to do a search on this topic, and found some useful but not definitive information.
My AP1 has about 40000 miles on the clock, and is completely stock. I have read some posts where people say they get at least 20 miles to the gallon. However, I am getting approximately 17 miles per gallon with about 50/50 mixed city highway driving.
I made sure my tires are properly inflated, and I just changed the oil about 100 miles back. As far as I can tell, the air filter is clean, and my engine idles smoothly. I am planning on getting my spark plugs changed soon, as I know that helps, but is there anything else I should be looking out for? I drive fairly reasonably: shifting at 4000 rpm usually.
Thanks for the help.

That does seem pretty low. Are your wheels spinning freely? no dragging brakes?
It probably wouldn't hurt to replace the PCV valve, although I doubt that would affect your mileage.

I was running low mpg's as well.
I changed my oil/filter, got a K&N replacement filter, and proper tire pressure. MPG's got much better. But for me, it was because I had a very dirty air filter. Once I changed it to K&N, it instantly shot up.

Lots of short trips? Live or work on a hill? Cold weather? Altitude? Stop-and-go? Ethanol fuel blend?
17mpg is not at all unusual for certain conditions, and it's certainly not "ridiculously low" compared to "some posts [on a web forum] where people say they get at least 20".

1) Get a K&N Filter (Or while you're at it if you can, an FiPK)
2) When you say your tires are inflated properly you're talking about ~32-34 around the board right? I ask because there was a thread a while ago who was insistant that 15psi was "properly inflated" :yikes2:
3) What tires are you running? If I may suggest a great DD tire the Sumitomo HRTZ 3's are cheaper then oem, perform better in wet and dry, get better mileage, and are great with road noise. [I've also had nothing to complain with them in AutoX, never tracked them though].
4) What are your avg ambient temps? Is it hot? Cold? Are you running ac? Is it mostly flat, hills, mixed?
5) You might shift low, but are you getting to 4K fast? Are you driving leisurely, or are you bursting to speed? Acceleration usually plays a larger factor in MPG's than rpm or actual speed do. [In terms of real world analyzing].

I get 17 on a bad fill up especially after I changed to stickier tires (properly inflated and aligned). On average, in Hawaii with a 50/50 mix (traffic is bad on both highway and streets) I get about 18.5-19, on a 01 - if you have the 01 ECU in your car (depends on when it was made, not when it was titled) then you are probably in the same situation.

i get 23-24 mpg driving around the city... and about 25 mpg on the highway.
