was going to start a thread similar to this. I get a whine on deceleration no vibrations or anything I installed the j's racing pinion spacer and comptech upgraded main caps I set pinion turning torque at 6 fltbs and the back lash at 6 thousands im thinking this is the cause of my whine I set the gears up on the tight side have a good centered contact patch. what do you think puddydaddy? thanks for any info as this is my first s2000 diff have setup gm and Dana rears this thing is like a mini 9 inch ford I figure the setup I have should be good for 400 hp or at least the 350 ish whp right now 320 hp at 8 psi I also have a 10 lbs pulley that gives me 355 whp 230 tq
If you set the rear using new bearings, the specs you set with will cause failure in short time!! If you used, used bearings you still need to address this right away but, you have a better chance of still having some load left.
Your backlash is on the wide side and maybe out of spec now. Your pinion preload was way to loose and now that the rear is ran is probably nothing!!
What ring and pinion gear set did you use? If you used, used gears did you check them for stress cracks before installing them?
As to the Comptech housing that you used, were the caps machined using a smooth machine radius or did they look like they were gouged? The CT caps and the KP caps I have been seeing have fitment issues and look to be gouged to fit.
The J’s racing “pinion spacer” or collar is a nice piece but requires a proper shim to fit. Getting the right shim is the hard part and can be very time consuming waiting for them to get it to you and also, very expensive if you don’t get it right the first time. I have helped out many guys with this issue over the years trying to get them what they need, to get their setups right.
I get PMs all the time inquiring about my PuddyMod solid steel sleeve. I do not sell it on it’s own for a few reasons, the first is it is not a shimmed part, it is custom hand fitted to the rear, no shim.
I would be more than happy to fix your issue and the Ops issue if you guys like. I wont charge you guys any labor fees. Your only expense will be shipping, any parts needed to fix, also, $25 to help cover cleaning and a fresh paint job. If I have a part you need that is used but in great condition at the shop such as bearings, shims, and what not I will give them to you at no charge as well.
Here are a few pics of common issues found that can be causing your problems,

Happy to help out you guys, best to send the rear(s) out soon, I have a open week next week other than a guy over on the Miata forums with a diff nightmare too. He has been to 2 shops and has spent $6,500 trying to get the rear in the car right. He had an OSGiken LSD installed and the shop(s) have not got it right and charged the crap out of the guy I'm taking care of him as well, like you guys

Ben is the man! This guy helped me out with my differential build. He guided me along when I was putting together mine. Even though the Motorklasse gear set I used isn't a really high quality machined piece, we still got it to work out really well. Im at about 15k miles with this gear set up and it's holding up really well so far!
